Tips for Selecting the Best Wedding Dress Preservation or Cleaning Service for You

Traditional wedding dress preservation in a white gloss preservation chest with a viewing window

Choose Traditional if…

  • Your dress is valued under $2,000 (Traditional includes $2,000 insurance coverage).
  • You want long-term preservation: museum-quality cleaning, professional stain removal, and a 100-year anti-yellowing guarantee.
  • It returns in a White Gloss preservation chest with a UV-protective viewing window.
Celebrity wedding dress preservation in a silver-tone preservation chest with a viewing window

Choose Celebrity if…

  • Your dress is designer or couture, valued over $2,000.
  • You want $3,000 insurance coverage and pressing matched to your fabric (steam or hand, depending on the fabric).
  • It returns in your choice of a Silver-Tone or White Gloss preservation chest, with the same 100-year guarantee.

Choose Clean-Only if…

  • You plan to wear the dress within a year (sample dress, vow renewal, anniversary) — or sell it to another bride.
  • It gets the same museum-quality cleaning, then returns on a premium hanger in a garment bag for easy access.
  • Best for short-term use — it skips the preservation chest and the 100-year guarantee. See our full wedding dress cleaning process.

What About Restoration?

If your dress is 20 years or older, you may need our restoration service instead of cleaning alone. Restoration is a 100% delicate, hand-cleaned, multi-cycle process built for aged textiles — it removes yellowing, halts deterioration, and brings the dress back to life for future generations. The dividing line is age-based: under 20 years → Cleaning & Preservation; 20 years or older → Restoration.

Before & after: restoration brings an aged, yellowed dress back to life.

Minor repairs are included at no charge with every restoration. If your dress needs more than minor repairs once it reaches our cleaning and preservation facility, we’ll call you with a separate quote and you decide whether to proceed before any additional work begins — no surprise charges.

Restoration comes as Traditional Restoration or Celebrity Restoration — distinct services for dresses 20 years or older. (Restoration can also be added to a Clean-Only or Christening order.) See our Restoration services and full process →

Not sure if your dress needs Restoration? Call us at (800) 887-0135 — we’ll talk through your dress’s age and condition and recommend the right service before you order. We’d rather you choose the right service the first time than upsell into one you don’t need.

Christening, Flower Girl & Baptism Dresses

We also clean and preserve children’s dresses — christening dresses, baptism gowns, flower girl dresses, and other heirloom children’s textiles. Same museum-quality cleaning, same preservation workflow, same 100-year guarantee — just a smaller preservation chest sized for a smaller dress. Learn more →

Common Comparison Questions

What’s the difference between the Traditional and Celebrity Preservation services?

Both services start with the same museum-quality cleaning — what differs is the chest finish, insurance coverage, and pressing method. Traditional Preservation includes a white gloss preservation chest, $2,000 of door-to-door insurance, and steam pressing. Celebrity Preservation includes an upgraded silver-tone chest, $3,000 of insurance, and hand or steam pressing depending on the fabric. We recommend Celebrity Preservation for silk, couture, heavily beaded, or dresses valued over $2,000, and Traditional Preservation is the right fit for all other dresses.

How much does wedding dress preservation cost?

Each service has a base price — the same for any dress size (a $100 surcharge may apply only for unusually large, heavy, or heavily soiled dresses). Traditional Preservation is $360, Celebrity Preservation is $435, and Clean-Only is $260. Restoration for older or heavily yellowed dresses runs $460–$535 with preservation, or $360 for cleaning and restoration without the chest. Free insured shipping is included at every step. A few optional extras, like shoe cleaning or boxing an item separately, are priced separately and aren’t included in the base price.

What’s the difference between Clean-Only and full Preservation?

Our Clean-Only service provides museum-quality wedding dress cleaning with light steam pressing, then returns your dress to you on a premium hanger in a garment bag. It’s the right fit if you plan to wear or sell your dress within the year. However, this option is not recommended for long-term storage and protection and therefore does not include our 100-year anti-yellowing guarantee. For long-term protection and storage, we recommend one of our two preservation services that includes the same museum-quality cleaning, an acid-free preservation chest with a UV-protective viewing window, backed by a 100-year guarantee. Read more about our cleaning process.

How do I know if my dress needs Restoration instead of Cleaning & Preservation?

It mainly comes down to age. Dresses under 20 years old are a fit for Cleaning & Preservation (Traditional or Celebrity). Dresses 20 years or older — or any dress with set-in yellowing or fragile, aged fabric — need Restoration, our 100% hand-cleaned, multi-cycle process built for older textiles: it removes yellowing, halts deterioration, and brings the dress back to life. Not sure which side of the line your dress falls on? Call us at (800) 887-0135 and we’ll recommend the right service before you order.

Does Clean-Only include the 100-year guarantee?

No — the 100-year guarantee covers dresses preserved in our acid-free preservation chest. Clean-Only returns your dress on a premium hanger in a garment bag, made for short-term storage or re-wearing. If you want the long-term guarantee, choose Traditional or Celebrity Preservation. Help Me Choose can help you decide.

Can I upgrade from Clean-Only to full preservation later?

You can, though it’s more cost-effective to choose preservation from the start. After a Clean-Only service, you’re welcome to send the dress back for full preservation — you’d just pay the full preservation price on top of the cleaning you already paid for, rather than a single combined price.
